Short biography:
Robert Hofmann is an ondist — one of the few active Ondes Martenot specialists outside France — based in Vienna, Austria. He performs on the Ondéa, a modern recreation of the instrument built by David Kean, with a repertoire spanning Messiaen and Debussy, his own arrangements of Bach pieces and Gesualdo’s Renaissance polyphony, and original works for ondes and electronics. With harpist Mirjam Schröder he forms Duo Kymata.
His path to the instrument runs through composition and music theory studies in Würzburg, a Tonmeister degree — a combined course of music and audio engineering — and a PhD in musicology on the theory of musical rhythm, both completed at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where he works as a sound engineer.
